Rigid type of baby carrier

The Kenyah are logging and burning farmers and amount to about 44,400 people. They use rattan cane for many things, like making their unique rigid baby carriers. They are protected with cotton fibre, have a semicircular base where the child sits and flat handles (also made of rattan) which are adjustable once the mother’s arms are introduced.

Rattan has many local uses and is also exported. Most rattan that is commercially consumed in the world is for baskets and woven furniture and comes from Indonesia. The climbing palms from which wild rattan is obtained have reduced over the last 45 years due to over-exploitation.
