Silk, cotton and velvet: vegetable and animal fibres for baby carriers

The Naxi are one of the ethnic minorities officially recognised in China, whose unique dress also typify their colourful baby carriers, which are still used and whose features vary according to the social status of the carrier.

In Sichuan, a rich and populous province, participation of women and men in the workforce is similar to the rest of the country (66% and 74% respectively). They work mainly in farming and livestock (producing cereals, silkworms and oil), but there is a growing industrial sector (metallurgical, electronics and pharmaceutical).
