A goat of yesterday in today’s history

A goat with facial lines, totally similar to the one that pastoralists from Aurunci and Ciociaria identify as capestrina, with divergent horns and erect ears, is found in a painting by Salvator Rosa dated 1651. This Neapolitan artist was active in Rome and Florence; therefore, it is very likely that the animals depicted in his well-known painting: «The Prodigal Son» belong to those breeds found between Lazio and Tuscany, around the middle of the seventeenth century.
