«The prettiest of the herd»
A cardélla goat with white facial stripes represents a specific colour variant known as grigia capestrina (grey capestrina). Generally, goats with a dark grey coat (such as the cardélla type) are barely discernible in a bushy environment dominated by a vegetation of myrtle, mastic, and other species of the Mediterranean scrub. Similarly, goats with a light brown coat (e.g., crapa lèpere, crapa ruàna) are easily concealed within an environment where Ampelodesmos mauritanicus (stramma) is dominant. This, indeed, might represent an advantage for pastoralists who, for various reasons, tend to hide their flocks from the eyes of foresters and park rangers.
