Productive farm tasks: women ploughing (Spain)

“Women in León play the role of men”, popular saying noted by Charles Davillier on his visit to Spain with Gustavo Doré.

In the provinces of León, where family subsistence farming continued in mountainous areas, women carried out the ploughing because at ploughing time the men had to temporarily migrate to earn a a wage, as still happens in many less privileged countries.
