‘Patineta’ (scooter)

This is a toy you can use as a means of transport and is made of pine with four wheels attached to the platform which acts as a base. A screw goes through the front part so that you can fix handlebars on and steer. It is 70cm long y 35cm wide, so you can sit on it with your feet hunched on the front or kneel on it. As it is home-made, you can tune it as you wish.

The scooter or castor cart is a traditional toy from our grandparents’ childhood. It is a recycled vehicle used by children to get around.

In the past, given the difficulty of buying toys because the cities were so far away—and they were expensive—you made your own re-using whatever unwanted objects you could find. To make this curious vehicle you basically needed a big plank where you could fit your body, and it could even be a wooden fruit or fish box, and another piece of wood to act as an axle for steering. The most sought after element were the wheels or castors as they were had to come by. Usually, they came from re-used mechanical parts, so sometimes the front wheels were smaller than the rear ones.
