Objective 16: Peace, justice and solid institutions

The rule of law and development are deeply interlinked and reinforce one another mutually. Thus, this Objective (Promoting just, peaceful and inclusive societies) focuses on the promotion of universal access to justice and the establishing of responsible an efficient institutions at all levels.

The top photo aims to show how in many countries citizens are still deprived of basic rights and subject to the power of force, while the bottom photo is an example for the future, based on solid, supranational institutions to tackle increasingly global problems.

The judiciary and the police are the institutions which are most affected by corruption in many countries, and the slowness and inefficiency of the justice system together with opaque regulations and processes, cumbersome and inefficient, increase the opportunities for corrupt officials to demand bribes. Other social blights to eliminate are physical, psychological and sexual violence to children, the white slave trade or trafficking with girls and women for forced labour.

And some of the aims of this Objective are to significantly reduce all kinds of violence an to put paid to abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all kinds of violence and torture to children, to considerably reduce corruption and bribery in all forms, and to widen or reinforce the participation of developing countries in the institutions for world government.
