Niland

Built by Leonard Knight over the course of almost 30 years, without the benefits of electricity or running water, Salvation Mountain attracts visitors from all over the world, from American teenagers to Chinese groups and troupes of gypsies. Located northeast of Niland, about 240km from San Diego, Salvation Mountain is Leonard’s tribute to God and message to the world: “God Is Love”. An army veteran of the Korean War, Leonard left the mountain in 2011, when his health started to decline. At the age of 82, he passed away on February 10, 2014.
