Main nutritional resources of vegetable origin

The main sources of our nutritional resources of vegetable origin provide 80 % of the food we eat, and correspond to three cereals, three tubers and one fruit, whose geographical distribution is very different now from that which characterised the original agricultural areas where they were domesticated.

Three cereals (rice, corn and wheat), three tubers (potatoes, yucca and yams) and one fruit tree (plantain) have been and are still the main sources of our nutritional resources of vegetable origin

Among the first seven positions for most nutritional resources we find countries with large populations such as China, India, Nigeria and Brazil, rich countries like USA,  Canada, France or Australia, or poorer countries which have ideal environmental conditions for certain tropical crops, like Ghana, Ecuador, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines.

(The ranking of products and countries may vary slightly depending on the date; these come from FAO 2014).
