A champion’s portrait
The shape or even the total absence of horns, are aesthetically important parameters to which pastoralists refer to for the selection of their animals. There are at least five key terminologies for naming the shape of a goat horn: zappetelle are divergent flat horns, often lyre-shaped; if the horns’ section is particularly flat and wide, this will be defined as acciacca. If horns of the zappetelle type are particularly divergent, these will be named as palazzole. Capannole —instead— are backwards-oriented horns having a circular section. Short, thin and rounded horns are generally called tunnelle and, in most cases, have little aesthetic value for local pastoralists.
