Fishing in lakes and rivers provides important nutrition to many peoples. Among indigenous groups in Equatorial Amazonia, levels of poverty are high, which limits their chances of buying food to accompany the yucca the women grow on their farms. It is common to see pairs or family groups fishing with round nets to get free food which is also rich in proteins.

Freshwater fish also contain omega 3 acids, though in lesser concentration than in sea species.
