Neonatal mortality and death in under 5s (the Philippines)

The two most commonly used indicators nowadays for evaluating infant death are the rate in under 5s and neonatal deaths (less than 28 days), both expressed in figures over 1,000 and closely linked to each other. In 2015 the world average for neonatal deaths was 19 per 1,000 and the rate for deaths for under 5s was 42.5.

In 2015 the Philippines, which in1970 had more control over infant death than other Asian and African countries, had both rates below the world average (12.6 for neonatal and 28 for under 5s). In that same year, Pakistan and the Central African Republic showed the highest death rate for neonatals (respectively 46 and 43 per 1,000), as compared to Finland and Japan (who share the lowest at 1 per 1,000).
