Goal 6.2: Adequate and equal sanitation and hygiene services (II)

Education and awareness of the importance of sewage treatment is essential from childhood. In many urban and rural areas in poor or developing countries, supplying drinking water is the main objective, rather than drainage of wastewater (grey and black sewage), and people live unaware of the serious danger this poses.

During more than eight years working on water and sanitation projects in developing countries, the author rarely came across end users who requested sanitation schemes. The author recalls, very uneasily, how many representatives of communities would come to the AECID Technical Cooperation Office (people came every week) with a project for water supply in their hands or an application for financing the same, but they never came with a project for the treatment of wastewater.

The picture shows hydro-sanitary education in state schools near Leogane, where the use of soap is emphasised for girls for their intimate hygiene and also to prevent waterborne diseases.
