Main nutritional resources: yams
The taro or yam is an edible tuber of different species of the genus Discorea, and originated in Southeast Asia (India, New Guinea and Australia), but is widespread in tropical regions of the world.
It was domesticated around 9000 years ago in present day New Guinea, which is still ranked sixth in the list of producers and where the first cultivation sites have been excavated showing impressive irrigation areas. It shares a high energy level with yucca and nutritionists also recommend it as part of the diet of top sportsmen and women.
Of the seven main producing states, 5 are in Africa.
