Forest resources: communal chestnut tree plantation (Spain)

In the early 20th century, reforesting native trees around villages became a common practice in Spain. This included the area of Maragatería in Leon, whre it took place once a year under the name fiesta del árbol (=tree festival). Chestnuts brought from the Bierzo region were planted in this area of León.

León is the province of Castilla y León which produces the most chestnuts per surface unit.
