Arembepe

Proudly holding a fish he had just caught, a man poses for a portrait in the hippie village located outside Arembepe, in the State of Bahia. At about 50km north of Salvador, the village – consisting of ingenuously constructed palm-front bungalows set amid san dunes and palm trees – gained worldwide fame back in the 1960s and 1970s, attracting visitors such as Janis Joplin, Mick Jagger and Roman Polanski. Although its popularity has declined over the years, there are still hippies living in the village, making and selling handcrafts and jewelry to national and international tourists.
