A river between two regions

White goats with curved backwards horns are found depicted in a mid-seventeen hundred painting by Jacob Philipp Hackert, a landscape painter originally from Brandenburg (Germany), who did much of his work in Italy. One of his mid-1700 paintings depicts a group of twelve white and dark longhaired goats, along the banks of the Garigliano River: the current natural border between Lazio and Campania regions. Most of these animals have horns, seemingly circular and turned backwards. Only two individuals appear hornless, while the rest of the depicted specimens have semi-erect/horizontal ears.
