The newborn unit
Or, put another way, the greenhouse commission. It is here that we gardeners look after the process of germinating seeds from our own allotment (mainly), to obtain seedlings adapted to the surroundings. The seedlings are placed in recycled containers people give us, such as yoghurt pots. Thus, we make use of (as much as possible) materials which would otherwise be considered rubbish.
Sometimes, the seeds come from the exchange workshops organised by the Retiro Park, or from one of the collaborating ecological allotments.
In Spring and Autumn, we organise sessions to prepare the Summer and Winter seedbeds respectively. The greenhouse commission takes charge, and all the allotment gardeners are invited to take part in preparing seedlings. The young plants stay in the greenhouse for their first weeks of life and are visited by gardeners who water them every few days and watch them evolve.
The seedlings are shared out among all the plots on the allotment. Each of us takes what they need when the season changes to begin planting their plot.
