Phnom Penh

Huot Sarom, 83 years old, poses for a portrait in front of the house her family helped her to build in what was left from her original property in the outskirts of Phnom Penh. Land grabbing by the Cambodian government is one of the most prominent forms of human rights violations taking place in the country. Funneled by corruption and weak institutions, and justified by the need to develop and beautify the cities, land grabs and forced evictions have been used to amass and concentrate wealth, and it has been exacerbating scenarios of inequalities and injustices.
