Personal hygiene: boudoir

Before the arrival of running water, middle-class families used washstands with basins in the bedroom, for washing face, hands, arms and torso.

The two candle-holders in the sides indicate that there was no electric light yet. The servants took charge of emptying the dirty water. They were usually women of rural origin.
