From Neolithic times, esparto provided the most frequently used plant fibre for making farm and domestic items, including sandals and espadrilles (which you can still buy with modern designs).

Mechanisation eliminates the need for certain objects for horses, and plastic bags have replaced esparto bags, although plastic bags have become one of the main waste products which are difficult to recycle, a modern problem.
