Water and foodstuffs (Spain)
Washing and cooking foodstuffs also needs water. The family are posing with baskets with the pig’s entrails for making sausages, and which first need washing to remove fat and dirt. In November, when the pigs were slaughtered, the water in the river was often freezing and the women got chilblains on their hands which they cured by rubbing with garlic. On returning from the river, they were given hot wine with honey to warn themselves up.
In the 21st century, villages have very few inhabitants, mostly elderly, who keep up the slaughter of a pig but now usually sharing with another family. The entrails are now washed comfortably at home with running water.
