Rag doll
Made of cotton in 6 sections –head, body and members- the doll was stuffed with wool or sometimes straw. It was then decorated to the owner´s taste. It is one of the oldest toys: it has accompanied us ever since data exists.
Ever since antiquity adults have sought for ways to entertain and educate their children. Excavations carried out in Egypt discovered dolls of over 3000 years old, as it was the custom to bury children with their toys. They are believed to be the oldest toys in History.
We know that both the Romans and the Greeks had articulated dolls. In their writings, Plato and Aristotle refer to marionettes and puppets as a means of children´s entertainment. They were made of marble, boxwood, plaster and wax. In ancient Rome, when young maidens married, they offered their dolls before the altar of Venus.
On the American continent, the natives carved dolls from the roots of cacti, not just as toys but also as educational tools to transmit knowledge about deities, so that children became familiar with their gods.
Its simple fabrication means that this toy is integrated into all cultures and with similar functions, which is why it has lasted until our times.
