Investment in midwifery is an optimum option (India)
Women of reproductive age make up a quarter of the country’s total population, and 85% of their sexual and reproductive health needs are covered, with little prospect of improvement in the next 15 years because although the total fecundity rate has fallen to 2.5 children, by 2030 the population will have grown by 240 million; this huge increase in population will mean an important increase in funding to keep up that 85% coverage, so the proportion of women who benefit will not rise.
The population of India is 1,236.7 million, 72% of whom is concentrated in rural areas. In 2015 the proportion of deliveries attended by professional midwives was 75% and maternal deaths were 175 for every 100,000 live births.
