Horn rebec (horn, horse hair, wood, skin)
This rebec is a clear example of adaptation to local resources, generally recycled materials or waste products from other activities. The one shown in the photo is based on a model from Puerto de Castila, in Ávil, near the province of Cáceres.
It uses a large piece of bone for the soundbox with a tautened skin covering. The neck is made from wooden pieces which are inserted in the horn and have a tuning key at the end. The only string, made of horse hair, goes through a small bridge rather than over it, to ensure this piece does not get lost. As with other rebecs, the bow is made from a folded wooden rod with taut horse hair covered in resin attached to the ends.
It is typical in areas with cattle and horses because the materials are readily available. The nature of the materials reduces the construction as hollowing and carving are not necessary.
