Ethno-botanical remedies (Ecuador)

The empirical use of medicinal plants, like guayusa, is still alive among indigenous groups, but is now also the national drink of Ecuador, where it is commercially produced on a large scale. Guayusa or waisa (Ilex guayusa) is a characteristic tree from the Ecuadorian Amazon region, its leaves being used to make energising teas. Chemical analysis shows a high content in energising substances such as caffeine, theobromine and L-theine, which help to reduce stress and mental and physical fatigue.

Midwives take it frequently during the day to “be active, strong and relaxed, even though we have little else to eat”. They also administer it to women in labour as a hot drink, mixed with other medicinal remedies or neat. The infusion is made with leaves which they have previously picked and dried ready for use.
