It is still the main basic foodstuff in all the American continent, which has four of the 7 main producers according to world ranking (first the USA, third Brazil, fourth Mexico and sixth Argentina), but its great genetic versatility has allowed it to flourish in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate climates, to become the second most consumed cereal.
