Doing the “straining” was an expression used for doing the washing and is associated with the “strainers” (clay or sometimes metal containers) where particularly dirty clothes were put because they needed several pre-washes with homemade bleach-

Bleach was made from ashes from wood burnt in the bread oven or from fireplaces on the floor. This process was repeated several times the day before going to the river to do the washing.
