Adolescent motherhood and women in the workforce (Ecuador)
Ecuador scores better on the Gender Development Index (GDI), which measures differences in health, schooling, and estimated per capita income for men and women, than on the Gender Inequality Index (GII), which compares, at different stages of life, reproductive health, empowerment and workforce participation for men and women, ( 0.976 and 0.391 respectively). It is interesting that the GDI in Ecuador in 2015, has a high rate of adolescent mothers(76%), but in contrast a high proportion of women in parliament (41%), similar to the highest-scoring European countries like Sweden.
Adolescent motherhood, higher in indigenous groups, limits personal and professional opportunities.
